Filipinos in New Zealand Celebrated Sinulog and Sto. Niño Festival with Vibrant Festivities

/ news

26 January 2026 – January is a time of festive tradition for Filipinos, marked by colorful celebrations such as the Sinulog and Sto. Niño festivals. While these vibrant events originated in the Philippines, their spirit thrives in New Zealand, where thousands of Filipinos continue to uphold their cultural heritage.

One of the most notable celebrations is the Santo Niño Fiesta and Sinulog in New Zealand, organized by the New Zealand–Filipino Devotees of Señor Sto. Niño. Now in its 32nd year, this Auckland-based event brings together Filipinos and non-Filipinos with a joyful showcase of faith and culture. Activities include masses, blessings of children, liturgical dances, and lively traditions inspired by the Cebu festivities, such as the Festival Queen contest, Sinulog Basketball Cup, and a Cultural Program.

In Christchurch, the Santo Niño and Sinulog Community of Christchurch hosts a lively celebration with dances, parades, and vibrant costumes, bringing together their community in the spirit of joy and unity.

Meanwhile, in Wellington, the 461st Feast of the Sto. Niño was commemorated by the Filipino Chaplaincy, further emphasizing the shared devotion and solidarity of Filipinos. These events blend solemn religious practices with exuberant festivities, featuring prayers, processions, and the iconic Sinulog dance, a powerful symbol of faith, gratitude, and community.

These celebrations reflect the strong connection Filipinos maintain with their roots, even while living abroad. The rhythmic movements and colorful energy of the Sinulog dance echo the enduring bond between their faith and cultural identity, passed on to the younger Filipino diaspora.

Through events like these, Filipinos in New Zealand celebrate not just their traditions but also their resilience and ability to bring a piece of home to a foreign land. Wherever they are in the world, their sense of community remains steadfast, making January a meaningful time of cultural pride and unity. END
