DFA Statement on Philippines and China Agree on Arrangement for Rotation and Resupplying (RORE) to BRP Sierra Madre on Ayungin Shoal

/ news

MANILA 19 July 2024 – The Philippines and the People’s Republic of China have reached an understanding of principles and approaches that will be observed by both sides in order to avoid misunderstanding and miscalculation in the conduct of the Philippines’ lawful and routine rotation and resupply missions to the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal.

This was achieved after a series of consultations following the frank and constructive discussions between the two sides during the 9th Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the South China Sea in Manila on 02 July 2024. Both sides continue to recognize the need to de-escalate the situation in the South China Sea and manage differences through peaceful means.

Both sides agreed that the understanding will be subject to regular review through the BCM mechanism.

In addition, both sides agreed that the principles and approaches will not prejudice each other’s positions in the South China Sea.

The Philippines will continue to assert its rights and jurisdiction in its maritime zones under UNCLOS, including in Ayungin Shoal which is within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf. END
